Frequently Asked Questions

What is a respiratory or sleep consultation? A consultation is where you have an appointment with one of our specialists. If this is your first appointment with our doctors, the time allocated will be long enough to discuss the symptoms you have been experiencing and formulate an individual management plan. Depending on your history you may be asked to undergo diagnostic respiratory and/or sleep testing before the consultation or afterwards.

What do I need to make an appointment? To access medicare reimbursement for our services you will require a referral from either a GP or another specialist. Unfortunately without a valid referral, Medicare will not reimburse you for any expenses from a specialist visit. Please note: A referral from your GP will last for 12 months unless it is an “indefinite” referral. A referral from another specialist will only last for 3 months. Please ensure that you maintain a current referral to receive any relevant Medicare benefts. If you are unsure if your referral is valid please do not hesitate to contact us on.

How to contact us? You can contact us at the consulting rooms which are staffed from 9.00am to 5.00 pm, Monday to Friday (except public holidays). You can also contact us by email. We aim to respond to your query before the end of the next working day.

What do I bring on the day of my consultation and/or test? Please bring with you: A valid referral, Medicare/DVA card and Private Health Insurance Card, Pension or Healthcare card , List of current medications, Test results , any questionnaires or forms you may have been given regarding this appointment

What should I expect before my first appointment? We will require you to complete a patient registration form, including privacy consent so that we can share your results and management plan with your referring doctor. Our patient registration form can be completed in advance to say you time on the day of your first appointment. We understand your time is important and endeavour to see you at your scheduled appointment time. However, instances occasionally arise where a patient may require urgent attention or a longer consultation than expected. We apologise in advance for any time you are kept waiting and thank you for your patience.

Payments and Fees? We are a private billing practice; Accounts are to be settled on the day by cash, cheque, EFTPOS, Visa or Mastercard. We have a flexible fee structure, with reduced fees for pensioners and health care card holders. The cost for consultations and tests vary. When you make your appointment you will be informed of the fee to be paid for your consultation and any known tests scheduled. We will submit your details to medicare, if they have your bank details your rebate will be deposited into your bank account within 24-48 hours.

If you are a new patient to our practice, please download and complete our new patient registration form and return to reception@westernrespiratory.com
